“Boss Monster is packed with nostalgic references to 8-bit video games, dungeon-crawling RPGs, and geeky pop culture. Players compete to become the ultimate villain: the final boss at the end of a side-scrolling dungeon.”

Boss Monster is a deck builder game, which typically isn’t my cup of tea; but the cards are so funny and the game isn’t too hard to get the hang of, so it won me over.

BOSS MONSTER IS A DECK BUILDING GAME, WHERE YOU PLAY THE MONSTER AND BUILD YOUR DUNGEON.

BOSS MONSTER IS A DECK BUILDING GAME, WHERE YOU PLAY THE MONSTER AND BUILD YOUR DUNGEON.

This game is for 2-4 players, although I’ve only played it with Mr. LL, and it works well as a 2 player, since the decks adjust to the number of players (which is a nifty mechanic). You start of building your dungeon, adding more and more rooms each round till you have 5 rooms in your dungeon. You can build on top of rooms as long as they have at least one “reward” match. When the adventures come out, they are going to go to the dungeon with the most of whatever reward they seek (i.e. the Thief is out for money, so he’ll go to the dungeon with the most money bags). If you built your dungeon right, you will kill the foolish adventurer who dared to enter your domain and claim his/her soul. If you didn’t, then the adventurer leaves with your booty and you get a boo-boo. If you get too many boo-boos, well, 5 Wounds to be exact, you lose. First boss to gain 10 Souls (and less than 5 Wounds) wins.

CAN YOU KILL ALL ADVENTURERS WHO SEEK TO TAKE YOUR TREASURES? THESE ARE THE BOSSES YOU COULD PLAY.

The box says it’s a 15 minute game play, but unless you’ve played this game a ton of times and have memorized the cards, it will definitely take longer than 15 minutes. Not because it is difficult, but because you will want to read every card, yours and your opponent’s, every time one comes into play. The jokes and specials on the cards are hilarious. I highly recommend this game; so much so, that I’m giving one copy of it away!
